There don't seem to be any accurate transcriptions of this song so I've been chipping away at it for awhile. I went back to it recently and I think I've got a complete tab of the guitars here (that includes Levin's treble stick parts). I had to do a lot of close listening and comparing videos, as the guitar parts are mostly center mixed. A Section (0:00) Belew and Fripp start out playing different patterns and add a note on the 5 and 9th times, so their intro form is: Belew: 1a 1a 1a 1a 1b 1a 1a 1a 1b Fripp: 2a 2a 2a 2a 2b 2a 2a 2a 2b 1a E|------------ B|-----8------ G|-9-----7---- D|---7-----10- A|------------ E|------------ 1b E|--------------- B|-10-----8------ G|----9-----7---- D|------7-----10- A|--------------- E|--------------- 2a E|--------------- B|-13-------10--- G|----12-------9- D|-------10------ A|--------------- E|--------------- 2b E|-12--------------- B|----13-------10--- G|-------12-------9- D|----------10------ A|------------------ E|------------------ Now, Levin is also playing Belew's part on the stick. He NEVER ADDS a note though, so he is eventually offset from Belew by two beats. He also changes the first note of the riff every third time (1c) 1c E|--------------- B|-10---8-------- G|--------7------ D|----7-----10--- A|--------------- E|--------------- (The Drums and Bass start on the last note of 1b and 2b, the second time.) B Section (0:10) Belew consistently plays 1a Levin plays 1a but is now offset from Belew by two beats. He occasionally plays 1c (about every fourth time) Fripp has changed to an early version of the Three of a Perfect Pair riff (3) (this is absolutely buried. It sticks out quite clearly through a karaoke filter though!!!???) 3 E|--------------- B|------------10- G|-------9------- D|-7------------- A|-----7---10---- E|---8----------- This verse is simply 16 bars of 4, now that the drums have entered. C Section (0:36) Belew has a new riff in 7 (4a and 4b), Fripp plays variations of Belew's original 5 pattern (5a, 5b, 5c, 6a, 6b). Levin is only playing the bass part. Belew: 4a(x6) 4b(x6) 4a(x6) 4b(x2) Fripp: 5a(x4) 5b 5a(x3) 5c 6a(x4) 6b 6a(x3) 5a(x4) 5b 5a(x3) 5c 6a(x4) 6b 6a(x2) Note that Fripp "resets" when he goes from 6a to 5a to land on the downbeat. 4a E|----------- B|----------- G|-6-5-4----- D|-------6--- A|---------4- E|----------- 4b E|-------------- B|-------------- G|-11-10-9------ D|---------11--- A|------------9- E|-------------- 5a E|---------------- B|-------12------- G|-13-------11---- D|----11-------14- A|---------------- E|---------------- 5b E|------------------- B|-14-------12------- G|----13-------11---- D|-------11-------14- A|------------------- E|------------------- 5c E|------------------- B|-14-------12------- G|----11-------14---- D|-------14-------11- A|------------------- E|------------------- 6a E|------------------ B|-------12--------- G|-11-------14------ D|----14-------11--- A|------------------ E|------------------ 6b E|------------------- B|----------12------- G|-13-11-------14---- D|-------14-------11- A|------------------- E|------------------- D Section (1:04) Simple 2 and 3 note chords in the left channel (D minor and F Major) while Fripp improvises. The chords could be Belew or Levin, but Levin does them live. E Section (1:43) Exactly the same as the C section, except it ends before returning to the 4a/5a patterns. F Section (2:00) The D section, but it repeats 7 times instead of 6. G Section (2:45) Belew (7a, 7b) and Fripp (8a, 8b) start out playing similiar patterns. Fripp's patterns have a weird stretch, but you'll see why in a second. Belew: 7a 7b 7a 7b 7a 7b Fripp: 8a 8b 8a 8b 8a 8b Levin plays Belew's 1a consistently. 7a E|-------------------8---7--- B|-10-----8---10------------- G|----9-----7----9-----9---9- D|------7----------7--------- A|--------------------------- E|--------------------------- 7b E|-------------------10---8---7--- B|-10-----8---10------------------ G|----9-----7----9------9---9---9- D|------7----------7-------------- A|-------------------------------- E|-------------------------------- 8a E|-------------------------10----8---- B|-13-------11----13------------------ G|----12-------10----12-------12---12- D|-------10-------------10------------ A|------------------------------------ E|------------------------------------ 8b E|-------------------------12----10----8---- B|-13-------11----13------------------------ G|----12-------10----12-------12----12---12- D|-------10-------------10------------------ A|------------------------------------------ E|------------------------------------------ H Section (3:01) This seems like a weird place to begin a new section, but it makes the guitar parts seem more logical. Belew will now start to play his 7b riff every fourth time, and Fripp changes to shorter versions of his two riffs that create an offset (12 then 14 against 11 then 13...yikes.) Belew: 7a 7a 7a 7b (repeat) Fripp: 8a 9b, then repeating 9a 9b Levin is still playing 1a, and throws the 1c thing in occasionally. 9a E|-------------------------10----8- B|-13-------11----13--------------- G|----12-------10----12-------12--- D|-------10-------------10--------- A|--------------------------------- E|--------------------------------- 9b E|-------------------------12----10----8- B|-13-------11----13--------------------- G|----12-------10----12-------12----12--- D|-------10-------------10--------------- A|--------------------------------------- E|--------------------------------------- (Notice that he stretches from 8 to 13 in order to play the same note on a different string) I Section (3:56) Belew and Fripp should now be synced again and are repeating 7a/8a and 7b/8b. Levin is still playing 1a. To end the song, Belew stops on an A, Fripp on a C, and Levin on an E, forming an A minor chord.
